FAQs

I have a disability, how will you support me?

We want to make sure that our training programme is open to everybody, so if you have a disability, please let us know on your application so we can accommodate you throughout the process. This will in no way affect your application.

I’m not a recent graduate, am I still able to apply?

Absolutely! Great schools are made of great teachers and we are looking for the very best – whether graduate or career changer. Career changers bring incredible skills and life experience into the classroom.

Do I need work experience?

By the time you decide to apply we really want you to be certain that teaching is the right career for you. That is why it’s great if you do have some experience with young people, even if it’s not in the classroom.

Can I defer for a year?

We’re only able to take on trainees who are ready to start their training next year. However, we would love to talk to you about your career path and how to make a strong application when you’re ready to apply.

If I’m not accepted the first time round, can I apply again?

Absolutely. For some candidates who aren’t accepted this time round, it’s a chance to gain some more work experience and strengthen their application to ensure every success the next time they apply.

If I’m selected, when would I start?

The St Joseph’s College SCITT training begins in September at the start of the academic year and finishes at the end of the school Summer term.

Your journey to becoming a teacher begins at interview and we will signpost you to further reading into educational research and subject knowledge development and curriculum resources. We will share a Subject Audit with you (to enable you to develop and enhance your subject and curriculum knowledge prior to the start of SCITT programme), suggested reading on areas of educational research, and you will be introduced to your placement school and mentors (where possible) prior to the start of the SCITT programme.

Do I have to do anything once I’ve got my place?

St Joseph’s College SCITT is committed to safeguarding students in our schools, so you will also be asked to complete an enhanced DBS check. Engage with any further reading suggested by SCITT leaders.
